This book came out as a surprise to me and also to many avid readers and writers. After looking at it’s reviews from the best selling thriller novel authors like David Baldacci and Lee Child, and definitely the plot of the story was nothing less compelling with one question in everyone’s mind “Why does she not speak?“
This books is a versatile piece of art which is inclusive of mystery, psychological thriller, Suspense, and Fiction.
Alicia Berenson was 33 years old when she killed her husband. Alice was a notorious painter married to a well-known fashion photographer Gabriel Berenson. One evening, when her husband Gabriel returns late from work, She shoots him five times in the face and goes silent. When Gabriel was murdered, Alice was discovered with a gun and a knife lying on the ground and standing there like a frozen piece of ice. She doesn’t speak a word thereafter. She didn’t speak in the interview nor when she was charged with Gabriel’s murder. Alicia’s uncanny silence and cold behaviour made this case infamous. Alicia was admitted to The Grove – under the supervision of Professor Diomedes who testimony had been so influential to the judge.
Theo Faber, forty-two years old is a psychotherapist, who is fascinated by Alicia Berenson’s case was eagerly waiting for the opportunity to work with Alicia as he resonated with her. He was determined to break Alicia’s silence and to find out Why she killed her husband – His childhood was dominated by hysteria, physical violence, and threats from his father. Which led him to undergo counselling with a psychotherapist “Ruth”, After few months he felt peaceful and happy. This fascinated him to become a psychotherapist and this is why – He related Alicia.
The story is told under two perspective; one from Theo Faber’s point of view and one from Alicia Berenson’s Diary entries which she started writing when she got depressed to clear her head. Most part of her diary is disoriented and her entries are obfuscated. As the story progresses, new characters are introduced, which slowly untwines the mystery of the murder.
I personally liked the way how Michaelides broke down the characters psychology, especially with Alicia Berenson. The story has a pinch of dark spooky vibe to it and will keep the reads on their toes. The most talked part about The Silent Patient is the Ending, which will literally throw you off startled on your seats. The Ending will make you burn through the pages of this book again to completely dissolve the twist. Must read book !
